Iran’s Ambassador Highlights Nuclear and Economic Cooperation with Russia


Iranian Ambassador Kazem Jalali spoke at the online conference „Russia-Iran Cooperation in a Changing World,“ emphasizing significant areas of bilateral cooperation, particularly in nuclear energy. He highlighted the Hormoz project, backed by a $25 billion investment, as one of the most important initiatives alongside the expansion of the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant.

Jalali noted that while the first unit is operational, the second and third units are under construction. The ambassador also discussed plans for joint cooperation on small-scale nuclear power plants, expressing hope for their implementation soon.

In terms of broader economic ties, Jalali underscored the growing importance of the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), describing it as a key transportation route in the region. He mentioned that cargo capacity is expanding and both countries are working closely to complete critical infrastructure projects, such as the Rasht-Astara railway.

Additionally, he highlighted the transit of Russian gas through Iran and the expansion of trade with Eurasian countries as rapidly developing areas of cooperation. The Iranian ambassador also emphasized scientific and technological collaboration in the nuclear sector, particularly in the production of radiopharmaceuticals.

He stated that Iran currently produces around 70 such products, indicating a focus on peaceful applications of nuclear technology in medicine and scientific research. Jalali expressed appreciation for Russia’s political support in international forums and stressed the importance of strengthening strategic cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in areas including energy, transportation, advanced technologies, and economic development.
