IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi expressed optimism about restoring relations between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) during a visit to London for UN discussions. He highlighted his experience mediating nuclear issues, including with Iranian and US governments, as well as Russian and Ukrainian leaders in the Zaporizhzhia crisis, suggesting that this background could be beneficial in facilitating dialogue.
Grossi acknowledged limited current communication but remained confident about future cooperation, despite Iran’s reservations due to past incidents. He also criticized the UN for its perceived lack of involvement in global conflicts, specifically mentioning the US-Israeli war against Iran and the ongoing challenges to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
The IAEA chief emphasized the importance of maintaining the NPT framework amid current threats and uncertainties.
