Iran’s Defense Minister Criticizes US-Israeli Aggression in Strait of Hormuz

Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesperson for the Islamic Republic of Iran, made critical comments during his weekly press conference on Monday regarding the ongoing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. He described the US-Israeli war against Iran as a blatant violation of international law that forced Tehran to take defensive actions.

Baghaei emphasized the importance of the Strait of Hormuz not only for Iran and Oman but also for the entire world, highlighting Iran’s commitment to ensuring safe transit through this vital maritime passage. He stated that both Iran and Oman are duty-bound to take necessary measures to ensure secure transit through the strait, as it lies within their territorial waters.

Baghaei further explained that Tehran adopted a series of defensive actions under international law to protect its national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security in response to the unprovoked aggression from the US and Israel. The Iranian spokesperson confirmed that this process continues, noting ongoing contacts and consultations with Oman on devising mechanisms for secure transit.

A meeting between Iranian and Omani experts was held in Muscat last week, and Baghaei stated that these interactions are ongoing without interruption. Baghaei’s comments come amid heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor through which a significant portion of global energy trade passes.

Iran has shut down the strait to its enemies and their allies following US-Israeli aggression, with stricter controls enforced last month after US President Donald Trump announced a blockade targeting Iranian vessels and ports. Tehran argues that these measures violate the terms of a Pakistan-brokered ceasefire that took effect on April 8 and was later extended unilaterally by Washington.
