Iranian Foreign Minister Ebrahim Raisi’s special envoy, Abbas Araqchi, is currently on an ongoing regional trip to Pakistan, Oman, and Russia. He has returned to Pakistan for a second visit following his initial trip to the Pakistani capital Islamabad.
According to Tasnim news agency, these consultations are not related to Iran’s nuclear issue but rather focus on bilateral relations and Iran’s conditions for ending the war with its neighbors. Araqchi is particularly emphasizing issues such as imposing a new legal regime on the Strait of Hormuz, receiving compensation, ensuring no further military aggression against Iran by warmongers, and terminating the naval blockade.
These discussions are part of an ongoing mediation effort by Pakistan to facilitate peace talks between Iran and its adversaries. The Iranian diplomat held high-profile meetings with Pakistani officials in Islamabad on April 25. Following his visit, Araqchi traveled to Muscat where he met with Omani Sultan Haitham bin Tariq before returning to Islamabad.
His next destination is Russia. Recalling the recent events of February 28 when the United States and Israel launched an unprovoked war against Iran, resulting in significant losses for Iranian military officials, Araqchi’s current mission aims at addressing the aftermath and securing a lasting ceasefire through mediation by Pakistan.
During previous negotiations on April 11 and 12, Iran proposed a ten-point plan that included the withdrawal of US forces and lifting sanctions but failed to reach an agreement due to deep-seated mistrust. Iran has made it clear that any future talks depend on the lifting of the US naval blockade, which they view as a violation of the truce.
The diplomatic efforts by Araqchi are crucial in navigating these complex geopolitical dynamics and potentially paving the way for a more stable regional environment.
