Esmaeil Baghaei, the spokesman for Iran’s foreign ministry, categorically rejected the provisions of a recent statement issued by an unspecified bloc. He called on the bloc to adjust its approaches away from one-sided and unconstructive positions held by certain members.
Baghaei emphasized Iran’s unwavering commitment to the principles of the UN Charter, particularly the prohibition of the use of force and respect for national sovereignty. In response to recent strikes, Baghaei clarified that Iran’s actions were strictly defensive in nature.
He stated that the defensive actions taken against US military bases and facilities on the southern shores of the Persian Gulf were carried out within the framework of Article 51 of the UN Charter, which pertains to the inherent right to legitimate self-defense. This was a response to what he described as military aggression by the United States and the Zionist regime against Iran.
Baghaei also pointed to established rules of international law regarding non-intervention and warned neighboring countries about allowing their territory to be used for attacks against Iran. He specifically highlighted that regional governments, whether by facilitating access, providing bases, or offering logistical or intelligence support, bear international responsibility for the consequences of these actions and must be held accountable.
The statement underscores Iran’s stance on self-defense and its commitment to upholding international law while also asserting its right to protect itself against perceived threats.
